Middlebrook Gardens is an award-winning sustainable garden design, build, and maintenance company specializing in California native gardens. Middlebrook Gardens has evolved, since 1976, to specialize in garden landscape designs that reflect the natural beauty of California, conserve precious natural resources, and link the urban landscape closer to nature. Middlebrook Gardens is a full service landscape company with a focus on design, construction, and maintenance. We specialize in ecology-based landscaping with the use of California native plants, environmentally friendly products, and water conservation techniques, all of which help build beautiful and sustainable gardens. Located in San Jose, California, Middlebrook Gardens was founded in 1976 by Alrie Middlebrook. During the first ten years, Middlebrook Gardens specialized in interior garden design, installation and maintenance. The firm received more interior awards than any other California-based indoor landscaping firm.

In 1995, Middlebrook Gardens expanded its practice to include outdoor design. Middlebrook Gardens now has designed and built over 600 native gardens that reflect that natural beauty of the local ecology, conserve water and eliminate the use of pesticides.

Middlebrook Gardens has received the prestigious Acterra Business Environmental Award in Open Space and Habitat Preservation/Restoration category as well as the California Landscape Contractors Associations’ 2003 Sustainable Landscape Award for Contractors in the Design Category. Middlebrook Gardens was also a winner of the 2012 Best of San Jose Awards in the Landscape Services category by the US Commerce Association (USCA). Our Team

Alrie Middlebrook President and founder of Middlebrook Gardens, Alrie Middlebrook co-authored the groundbreaking book Designing California Native Gardens; The Plant Community Approach to Artful, Ecological Gardens. She regularly gives talks and lectures throughout California on sustainability in garden design. Kelly Matheson A designer with Middlebrook Gardens, Kelly Matheson graduated from UC Davis in 2012 with her B.S. in Landscape Architecture. Her focus is restoring habitats through gardens and she is interested in landscape ecology. Jessamyn Lett Jessamyn Lett graduated from UC Davis in 2012 with her B.S. in Landscape Architecture and a minor in Sustainability in the Built Environment. After a summer internship with CNGF, she begin working as a designer with Middlebrook Gardens. She was first drawn to Middlebrook Gardens because of her interest in urban food technologies and school gardens.
